The James Snead Award

for the best undergraduate essays dealing
with one or more of the following:

Film
African-American literature
American literature
German literature

Prizes totaling $1000

Deadline for Receipt of Submissions:  Monday, October 5, 2009 (mailed submissions should be postmarked by October 2)


Guidelines:

  • Essays must be at least 8 pages long.
  • Essays may have been written at any point during an
  • Undergraduate's career at the University of Pittsburgh.
  • Essays may be submitted by students or their teachers.
  • Essays that have won other university-sponsored awards in prior years are not eligible. Essays should not be submitted simultaneously to other English Department contests.
  • Submit six clean copies of the essay with title appearing at top of the first page.
  • Author's name should appear only on a separate cover sheet that also includes: the essay's title; the author's address, phone number, and email address; the name of the award for which the essay is being submitted; and (if applicable) the course at Pitt for which the essay was written and the name of the instructor.
  • Assignment may be included if necessary to clarify an essay.
  • Essays will not be returned.

Winners will honored at the University's Honors Convocation

After September 30, submit entries to the front desk of the English Department, Cathedral of Learning 526. Inquiries to pkameen@pitt.edu. Award amounts are subject to available funds.
