Undergraduate Composition

Requirements and Placement

Students who score 600 or above on the SAT Verbal Exam will be automatically placed into Seminar in Composition. Students who score below 600 on the SAT Verbal Exam must take the University’s English Placement Exam during the summer in order to determine which introductory composition course(s) they are required to take. Essays written for the Placement Exam are scored 1–4:

Students who are placed into Intensive Workshop in Composition or Workshop in Composition must take Seminar in Composition after successful completion of the initial course.

Exemptions

There are three cases in which a student may be exempted from the Composition requirement:

  1. The student scores 600 or above on the SAT Verbal Exam and a “5” on the Advancement Placement English Exam.
  2. The student has taken an equivalent course in composition at another college or university.
  3. The student earns an “A” in Intensive Workshop in Composition or Workshop in Composition and his or her teacher appeals for exemption on the student’s behalf to the Director of Composition.
