The Department of English at the University of Pittsburgh
is at the forefront of innovation and excellence in English studies. Our internationally recognized scholars and writers offer courses in Literature, Composition, Writing, and Film Studies. Students may major in Literature, Writing, or Film Studies; or they can minor in Literature or Film Studies or earn a certificate in Children's Literature or Public and Professional Writing.
With 72 full-time faculty, over 1,000 undergraduate majors, and over
170 graduate students, we are the largest department
in the School of Arts and Sciences. In addition to these undergraduate majors, we offer
an MA in English, an MFA in Writing (poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction),
and a PhD emphasizing Cultural and Critical Studies, as well as master's and doctoral level certificates in Film Studies. The English MFA and PhD
programs consistently rank among the very best in
the country.
