Kathryn T. Flannery earned her Ph.D. in English from the University of Pittsburgh in 1987, Professor Flannery was a member of the faculty at Indiana University, Bloomington until 1999 when she returned to join the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh. She has also taught at Haverford College and the University of Michigan. She teaches and writes in the areas of women's studies, literacy studies, early modern British cultural studies, and poetry.
Professor Flannery directs the interdisciplinary Women's Studies Program and serves on the Provost's Committee on Undergraduate Studies and the Provost's Committee on Women's Concerns. She has also co-directed the Western Pennsylvania Writing Project's Summer Institute for Teachers.
Research and Publications: Her publications includes Feminist Literacies: 1968-1975 (2004); The Emperor's New Clothes: Literature, Literacy and the Ideology of Style (1995); and articles on the intersection of gender and literacy, performance pedagogy, feminist polemic, curriculum reform, teacher education, and the teaching of writing. Her current work focuses on the intersection of literacy and the visual arts in feminist artist's books.
