Department of English

boundary 2

boundary 2, an international journal of literature and culture (published by Duke University Press) emanates from the English Department of the University of Pittsburgh. Paul A. Bové has edited the journal since 1989, during which time it has evolved from a journal of ‘postmodernism’ to a journal dealing theoretically and historically with literature and culture in ways important to a transitional era in media, writing, politics, and ideas.

In recent years, the journal has published special issues on such topics and figures as the University in Globalization, W. E. B. Du Bois, Edward W. Said, Modern Chinese Literary and Cultural Studies, and Left Conservatism. Renewing its three-decade long commitment to the publication and criticism of poetry, the journal has recently published a special millennium issue, 99 Poets, and a series of dossiers presenting the work of various poets from Asia-Pacific, North America, and Europe. The journal has intentionally involved itself with the new flows of literature, criticism, theory, and other media so noticeable in the period of Globalization.

boundary 2 is a ‘must-hold’ journal in the humanities, according to the American Library Association, and is among the first humanities journals to be made universally available on-line through the Mellon Foundation–sponsored Jstor project. The journal has won numerous awards and notices.

boundary 2’s editorial collective includes a number of internationally famous scholars of US, European, Latin, and Pacific literatures and cultures. The journal’s plans include the publication of special issues on Ralph Ellison, Human Rights, and Secularism.
