Deborah Galle

Deborah Galle is an American and Canadian writer and editor with industry experience across journalism, construction products (WIC) and higher education. Her interest in editing and writing narrative journalism began in the NYC area where relatives and neighbors worked in print and broadcast journalism. She began her first full-time city daily job during summers in high school and has seen her articles or columns published in various print media. Editing and research credentials include books. Topics span across socio-economic reforms in China and street medicine in Pittsburgh to community journalism, music, aviation, space, personal essays and poetry.
Deborah completed her MFA studies at the University of Pittsburgh and earned the MFA program’s Graduate Creative Nonfiction Award for a story about becoming certified to skydive. Since joining the faculty in 2000 she has held a Composition Program Assistant position, served on committees and judged annual writing competitions within Pitt or the greater Pittsburgh community. She has also taught online or in-class courses at Chatham University and Washington and Jefferson College.
Her academic and research interests include best practices of teaching and learning writing as well as narrative journalism and Native American, science and trans-national literatures, which she incorporates into her Seminar in Composition (SC) courses. At Pitt, she has taught both full- and part-time, primarily within the department’s Public and Professional Writing Program (PPW) and its Engineering Writing Program in concert with Pitt’s Swanson School of Engineering. Courses have included Freshman Seminar: Transnational Literature, Writing for the Public, Engineering Communication in a Professional Context, Written Professional Communication, Business Writing, SC: Science and Culture, SC: The Essay, and SC: Engineering.
