Stephanie Kane-Mainier

Stephanie Kane-Mainier has been an educator for almost thirty years and has been teaching composition at the University of Pittsburgh since 2009.  A Pitt alumna, she holds a BA in poetry writing, an MAT in English education, a certificate in Composition, Literacy, Pedagogy, and Rhetoric, and PhD in Language, Literacy, and Culture. Her most recent research examined the ways in which poetry as a genre and its instruction are represented by secondary literature textbooks. Her other research interests include the teaching of writing, poetry instruction’s impact on writing development, the impact of curriculum materials on practice, and the intersection of belief and practice for English educators.  Stephanie is a 2001 fellow of the Western Pennsylvania Writing Project where she also served as a teacher consultant, developing and facilitating professional development for practicing teachers to improve the teaching of writing. Previously, she taught graduate courses and supervised pre-service teachers in Pitt’s Graduate School of Education and was a fellow and research associate at Institute for Learning, which is the practice arm of the Pitt’s Learning Research and Development Center.  She is also a senior content expert for several education non-profit organizations, specializing in curriculum and assessment development and professional learning; she is currently working on projects with EL Education, Odell Education, and CenterPoint Learning Solutions, and previously with Public Consulting Group, Instruction Partners, Great Minds, and The College Board. Stephanie usually teaches Seminar in Composition, Critical Writing, Intro to Critical Reading, Written Professional Communication, and Writing for the Public.
